A Guide to Styling Small Spaces

In the world of interior design, a vignette is more than just a fancy term for an arrangement of objects. It's a storytelling tool, a curated set of items that collectively express a mood, suggest a theme, and reveal your personality. Whether it’s a corner of a room, a section of a shelf, or a tabletop, creating a vignette is an art form that adds character and depth to your home.

I’m giving you the steps to design vignettes that not only look stunning but also reflect your personality.

1. Start with a Purpose
   Before you begin arranging objects, think about what you want your vignette to achieve. What is the purpose? For me, I want each little space to feel it’s own sense of ‘cozy.’ Depending on where it’s located, U may opt for whimsy. Other places I lean towards a reflective feel and some are simply practical.
   For you, it could be a place where you want to find inspiration like in a home office. Or maybe it’s a special spot where you want to display treasured childhood? Having a clear purpose in mind will guide your selection of items and ensure your vignette tells the desired story.
   2. Choose a Focal Point
   Every vignette needs a star—an item that draws the eye and sets the tone for the rest of the display. This could be anything from a large, colorful vase or a striking piece of artwork to a vintage mirror or a unique sculpture. Your focal point should be something you love and are excited to showcase.

6. Add Personal Touches
The most memorable vignettes are those that feel personal. Include items that mean something to you, like family photos, heirlooms, or souvenirs from travels. These objects not only tell your story but also make your space truly unique.

7. Experiment with Lighting
Lighting can make or break a vignette. Soft, diffused light can create a warm, inviting glow, while a directed lamp can highlight the textures and colors of your display. Consider the natural light sources to best showcase your vignette.

8. Edit Ruthlessly
A common mistake is to overcrowd a vignette, which can make it feel cluttered rather than curated. Don’t be afraid to edit down your items. Often, less is more. Give your pieces some breathing room so each one can be fully appreciated.
